On January 11th, 1890, baseball Hall of Famer Max Carey was born. He played most of his career with the Pirates from 1910--1926. Spent the rest of 1926-1929 with the Brooklyn Robins.
He had a lifetime batting average of .285 with over 2600 hits. He was most known for his great speed and stolen base ability. He had 738 career steals and was the 10 x National League stolen base leader.
As an outfielder he was second all-time in outfield assists for center field. Of course he is also first all-time in errors by a centerfield.
Because of his great speed, leadership and stolen base records, he is the Baseball Quote of the Day recipient.
"He was just as fast between the ears as he was with his feet. That's what made him harder to stop than a run in a silk stocking."
--Joe Williams, talking about Max Carey
